About Us

Sheringham was an all round angler. He felt that a tench or a pike were every bit as noble as a fine salmon. He fished for all species with equal enthusiasm. At a time when it was expected that a respectable middle class chap would be exclusively a game fish angler, and the majority of coarse anglers came from the 'other ranks', Sheringham's egalitarian view was unusual, and refreshing.

When our Society was formed to bring together anglers of like mind it seemed entirely appropriate to name it in honour of a man whose writings we admire so, and whose attitudes we espouse.

The Sheringham members take a Corinthian view of angling. We have no rules, as such, but by their very nature, all members offer good fellowship, and a willing, generous spirit.

Oh so rare, and so perfect. The Black Oval Wizard.

Traditional Tackle

Of course, it isn't necessary to use vintage fishing tackle in order to be able to claim an understanding of the older angling values, nevertheless, we all find that it works very efficiently, and fits more easily into our angling lives than would plastic rods and reels. For those of us who need a talisman, an aid to conjure the moment, cane rods and vintage reels provide an innocent link to earlier, perhaps better times.

Without loosing sight of the fact that the principal object of our affections is fishing, we're all shamelessly addicted to our lovely old fishing tackle. Restorations are undertaken, profitless trades effected, and information shared.
